Goals:

• The participants will get to know Herman Shapira – the first to bring up the idea of founding the KKL-JNF.
• The participants will hear the story of different types of entrepreneurship in Jerusalem.
• The participants will become “entrepreneurs” and will experience ways of problem solving.

Activity order:

1. Writing down a problem that bothers me in the world today.
2. Small Entrepreneurs – participants will become entrepreneurs. 
3. Getting to know Zvi Herman Shapira, founder of the KKL-JNF.
4. Who is an entrepreneur? – Discussion.
5. Social initiatives in Jerusalem.
6. Me as an entrepreneur – a solution to the problem the participants thought about in the beginning.

We will ask each participant to write down one problem that bothers him today in the world.

The participants will become entrepreneurs. We will present them with a problem and give them a limited time to try to solve it. At the end of the allotted time we will ask each group to present its solution to the problem.

The problem:

You and a group of friends went for a walk in the woods. You have been walking for almost a whole day and you found out that you almost run out of food and water and you have no phone signal. You know that in an hour it’s going to get dark and you are stuck in the woods. You must get help! At your disposal: 3 bills of 5 $, a quarter bottle of water, one apple and a flashlight.

We will summarize the first part by saying that each group has a different approach to entrepreneurship. All groups encountered the same problem, but each group found a different way to deal with it.

We will now present the participants with another problem:

You are in a small country in the Middle East, not even a country. You are interested in establishing a thriving and flourishing Jewish settlement with your friends and later, also a state! But you have a big problem, you have no land. You do not have enough money to buy land. This way there is no chance that you can establish something, not even a small Jewish settlement. What are you doing?

After we’ll hear the answers, we will introduce you to Zwi Herman Shapira (it is possible to ask some pupil to present the story).

We will ask them:

Who in your eyes is an entrepreneur? What does a person need to do, to be an entrepreneur? Can everyone be an entrepreneur? In your opinion, was Herman Shapira an entrepreneur?

We will divide the pupil into 4-5 groups. Each group will be given a problem or conflict concerning relations between the State of Israel and the Diaspora. Each group will need to act as an entrepreneur and find a solution to the problem. The participants must write the solution clearly on a piece of paper in which they explain the problem and the solution they offer.

There will be 4 “blue boxes” in the room. Each group will display its project while standing next to his blue box.

In the end all the groups will have to choose the most original and successful project and decide in which project they choose to invest their money (of course they are not allowed to invest in their own project).

We will then check the amount of money in the blue boxes and ask the participants to tell where they chose to invest their money and why.

We will reveal them that all the stories to which they have chosen to donate the money, belong to one body – the KKL-JNF.

We will tell the participants that all the projects presented to them, are part of the KKL-JNF. 

We will tell them that KKL-JNF’s entrepreneurship didn’t start only 100 years ago but that it is constantly renewed and grows together with the development of technology.

We have learned what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Even problems that sometimes seem difficult and unsolvable to us, are solvable when you think outside of the box. We got acquainted with Zvi Herman Shapira, who came up with the idea of the “Jewish National Fund”, and the various initiatives that the KKL-JNF is creating today.

Now everyone will go back to the idea he wrote at the beginning and find a way to solve it, by being an entrepreneur”.

Hermann Shapira also had a note in his pocket for a very long time. He is not the one who found the solution but people who walked in his footsteps created KKL-JNF. Do never throw away your note.

Even today, KKL-JNF continues to come up with new ideas. Herman Shapira’s activities did not end with just buying land but continued with other activities. (put up signs with drawings about the projects of KKL-JNF).
